How a garden and patio helps create a home.
A well designed garden is a lovely place to grow plants and enjoy flowers. A love of delphiniums or roses or wild flowers may be indulged, with the garden designed to display the plants to their best. The design of patios and paths within the garden is important as it provides the frame work for the beds, as is the choice of materials. For herbaceous perennials, such as lupins and peonies, wide beds surrounded by traditional materials such as york stone and red brick may be needed. While for alpines, raised beds of brick or sleepers are preferred to provide better drainage and also make them easier to be admired.
If entertaining family and friends is on the list of activities, then there needs to be space for a table and chairs and maybe a barbeque too. This is where a thoughtfully planned and constructed patio really becomes an outside room. Privacy from neighbours can be created by the use of a screen with climbing plants such as honeysuckle covering it. This space should be easy to get to from the house and have a firm path, such as stone or bricks, so that chefs carrying trays of food and visitors in heels or sandals can walk along it without mishap. Consideration should be given to extending the use of this space, to give protection from too much sun or from light showers. A gazebo that can be quickly erected when needed, or a structure whereby climbing plants provide a canopy of blossom, would be suitable.
A smaller space can be made to give somewhere peaceful to sit, somewhere to unwind at the end of the day. This could be the place that catches the last of the sun on a summer evening.
If there are children living in the house or regularly visiting, then space may be created for them to run around in, play ball, have a sandpit or climbing frame. If there is room, space may be fenced off for any dogs who live in the house.
The garden can provide food for the kitchen. Even if there is not space, or the inclination to grow a whole range of vegetables, it may be possible to grow a few varieties such as some salad leaves or a trellis of runner beans, perhaps interspersed with sweet peas. A couple of soft fruit bushes would fit in between a collection of flowering shrubs and a selection of plants may be grown to provide cut flowers for the house.
